A short time later she had fallen asleep.

Thar Thar, on the other hand, lay there awake. The fairy tale and the song had carried him back to the children in Hsipaw, and he could not stop thinking about them.

He missed them more with each passing day. The worst part was not knowing how they were doing. Whether they were healthy. Whether U Ko Tun was looking after them, as he had promised. He had written a long letter to them months ago, and he was waiting with increasing impatience for their reply.

They were separated by more than the two days of air travel. Much more. He was going to find it difficult to explain to them where he had been. To find the right words for all that he had seen and experienced. He had not traveled merely from one place to another, from one country to another; he had traveled from one time to another, and now he understood how dangerous that could be. The longer he stayed in New York, the more he worried that it would be impossible to go back. One can return to a place easily enough, but to a time?

How much of the unfamiliar could a person tolerate?
